Letters to President-Elect Trump

The election of Donald Trump as the new president of the United States has generated a multitude of reactions, opinions, and emotions among students at Francis Lewis High School. We asked students to express their opinions, wishes, as well as aspirations by writing letters to Donald Trump. Here is a collection of letters, as well as poems to the President-elect. “I write and in hope because that is all I have because someone, somewhere, will not only hear but they will listen,” said Nasita Maywalall in her letter. “And maybe, just maybe, this might make a difference.”

Dear Donald Trump,

Please treat everyone the same. Don’t deport people who are already in the country, thanks. Be respectful to citizens and civilians and other countries. Don’t be violent, but rather practice good diplomacy. I am concerned about actions you will make that will affect people. Please don’t overturn Roe Vs. Wade. Abortion is the right of the mother. And please don’t reverse gay marriage. This country has worked too hard to achieve the rights that we have.

Sincerely, a concerned Asian citizen from NYC

Dear Donald Trump,

I am scared, I am afraid, I am terrified. The unknowns of the true haunt my mind. Now elected President of the United States, the future of our country is in your hands. The question is: What are you going to do with this power?

Are you going to use that power to benefit the new generations, and the generations after?

Are you going to use that power to create new jobs for all of the Americans who are suffering?

Are you going to use that power to create a fair tax system, a system that works for everyone and not just the 1%?

Are you going to use that power to create a health care system that people can afford, so they do not have to worry about not being able to pay for medication they need to survive?

Are you going to use that power to create reforms to keep our children off the street, and in housing so that they do not have to worry about where they will end up next?

Are you going to use that power to reform our justice system so that everyone can feel protected under the law, not having to fear our men and women in uniform at every corner?

Are you going to use that power to resolve discrimination against the LGBT community and minorities?

So, Mr. Donald J. Trump, what are you going to do with this power?

Sincerely,

Someone who cares about their future.

Dear Donald Trump,

Please process your thoughts before you express them because it may damage many. Please review your thoughts and place yourself in other’s shoes before saying or doing. For example, please consider those circumstances of immigrants who have not expressed threat.

Dear Donald Trump,

Please keep in mind those who do not feel welcome in white majority regions. For example, the LGBT community or the one African family surrounded by racist people. Do not promote hate and respect those who are different.

Thank you

Dear Donald Trump,

LGBT rights should not be taken away. The nation is taking so much delight from the people who could finally have gay marriages or not be discriminated over being transgender. It is to be feared that following this new presidency and the upcoming new Supreme Court justices, people might have such rights taken away from them again. LGBT Equality should continue to be pushed and remain legalized. With that said, I still have hope in America for the following years. I hope America’s economy will indeed by benefiting as new job opportunities are given out if this proposals are actually being carried out by the President, and the nation could still prosper and improve with such President.

Dear Mr. Trump,

The issue I care about is about my future. How the new president will help college financially, family, health care and more. My hope is having to pay less for college and healthcare. That there’s a lot more jobs, so people have no financial problems. The rent has increased a lot and is very hard to pay and live. I feel that a lot of problems are caused because of money and it should change.

Dear Mr. Trump,

I hope we can provide jobs and lower the gap between the rich and the poor, providing more loans or lower tuition fees, easier for people to become educated. Become equal and erase all the prejudice and racism.

Dear Donald Trump,

I would like you to reduce government spending. I would also like to you to address the issue of unequal taxes among the people. I would like minimal government in my daily life. I would like you to appoint a justice that is strictly conservative. I want you to appoint an independent justice.

Every four years the voters of the U.S. are called upon to choose a president. Choosing the right president to lead the federal government is important. My hopes for the next president is for him to have the ability to organize an effective team and make the team is worth. The president should be able to debate with advisors on the merits of a given decision in order to bring many different viewpoints. Also a president having a flexible mind is essential because he/she will make many decisions on many different issues. As of right now, my fear is that our newly elected president Donald Trump does not have much political experience and may not be as flexible when making decisions. A solution I want to see to ensure is a brighter future for me and everyone else is for the next president to be more knowledgeable of the Constitution and having a history of applying it to a new piece of legislation.

Dear Next President,

I hope that you can accurately represent the youth and future generations. I feel that the youth are underrepresented and often left to fend for themselves in the real world. Furthermore, I want minorities to be greater represented instead of degraded. As a country, America represents acceptance and equality, values that I feel Americans as a whole have forgotten. Too often we see bigots and xenophobes in our society.

Dear America,

There are various issues and conflicts that have been ignored. I hope there is a reformation for issues such as education and taxes. The expectations are very high, but the standards provided for our Americans are low. There aren’t enough resources to benefit the public and also immigration is going to be chaos if so many families get deported and will never be able to see their loved one. What if it happened to you?

B.R.

Dear Next President,

I hope that you can help the United States prosper. No one knows how 2016-2020 with Trump will go. Hopefully you have the proper sense to help the United States, especially its youth. Clearly there is a problem in today’s youth if they consider it funny to support Trump. To prevent this in the future, the next president should set an example.
