In the world of technology, there is a group of JROTC cadets that stand out among your typical army JROTC cadets— FLHS cyber team. With their constant innovation and one of a kind cyber program, their team is pushing boundaries of what’s possible in the field of cyber security. And one squad in particular is leading the charge. Screws, bolts, wheels and complex designs that are brought to life—they have it all.
The cyber team at Francis Lewis is a team of dedicated JROTC cadets focused on cyber security, ethical hacking, and digital defense. The team participates in competitions—where students not only develop skills in securing networks, identifying vulnerabilities and protecting computer systems, but they get to show off their skills and what they’ve learned. In addition to cyber security, the team has a robotics division where students explore robotics, programming, and engineering concepts. The robotics cadets constantly engage in hands-on projects, building and programming robots, and compete in robotics competitions—combining cyber security principles with automation and AI. The cyber team has existed for a few years now, and Francis Lewis is one of the only high schools to offer a cyber security program to not only JROTC cadets, but to FLHS students as well.
Throughout the year, the team works on multiple things with one common goal shared between all of the cadets in cyber: winning competitions. The Cyber Patriots will work on identifying vulnerabilities in school devices and downloading the required updates. The Cyber Drones are currently working on a presentation that will inform others of drones and other information that correlates to drones. And last but certainly not least, the Cyber Robotics team who work hard to plan out the design of a robot that will correspond to upcoming competitions. Each competition typically centers around a theme in what the competing robots must be able to execute within the promoted time.
