As the 10th period bell rings on a Friday and everyone is ready to leave and start their weekend, not all students are going home just yet. Instead, they will go to a new club, the Medical Research Club. Led by Club President Jocylen Zheng, students learn about various topics that can be beneficial to know in the medical world, such as HPV and research methods.
“I define medical research as research on experiments, medical experiments, on health and diseases [with an] aim to find cures [and] vaccinations for the wellbeing of humans,” Zheng said.
“I chose to start the Medical Research Club because I want to inspire other people to pursue the medical field,” Zheng added. “I know a lot of people in the school who are interested in medicine or video research so I created this club in hopes of educating them and a sense of what it would be like if they were to pursue it. They would have background knowledge.”
Zheng hopes that the club “will help them be more prepared in the future in the medical field”.
“Personally, I want to become a biomedical researcher,” Zheng said. “If people want to do the same thing, I feel like knowing this will be really useful. [Students] going into the field, going to college, like medical school, will be more prepared compared to other individuals.
“I feel like it helps students by making them more knowledgeable,” Zheng explained. “Most people don’t know about this stuff because they don’t look at what kind of diseases there are. We also teach them how they can prevent it so they don’t themselves get it or their family.”
Club members have joined because they are interested in different aspects of the medical field.
“I joined because I have a fascination with medical stuff,” freshman Dean McGuire said. “I am interested in the immune system.”
Attending clubs can also have various benefits when it comes to building a community.
“Yes. I feel like people will make new friends and have a community,” Zheng said. “I am able to have a community here. I am a really big introvert. It might be surprising, as introverts might be too scared to do stuff, but I feel like having an environment to talk to people about it could. This community allows us to work together and make new friends.”
