Francis Lewis Holds Ground Breaking for New Annex
On May 30 construction began on building the new annex which will hold 555 more seats to relieve the overpopulation at Francis Lewis High School. The School Construction Authority (SCA), Department of Education officials, and politicians were invited to watch this special ground breaking event.
The annex will include a state of the art culinary arts room, where students will learn how to cook and prepare meals in a commercial kitchen classroom that students will be able to eat. There will be culinary arts classes where students can use fresh grown herbs and vegetables grown directly from the hydroponic greenhouse. Other spaces will include a science lab, locker rooms, and a multi-purpose event space.
Local Council member Peter Koo contributed $750,000 to fund this project. “We always heard this school is overcrowded but the quality is still very good,” said Koo.
Despite Francis Lewis being one of the most overcrowded high schools in New York City, it still receives the most applications of all public high schools in New York City.
