According to the National Museum of the American Latino, Hispanic Heritage Month started in 1968 under President Johnson, as just a celebratory week. However, 20 years later, the week was changed to an entire month by President Reagan and has been recognized ever since. Thus, to celebrate this month Francis Lewis High School held a Hispanic Heritage Month event on October 13th. The vivid tables and cheerful chattering created a strong sense of community within the courtyard. You were able to hear sounds of laughter and saw smiles all around. There were tables that represented a country where they would share cultural norms, clothing, and food for everyone to enjoy. The courtyard was filled to the brim with enthusiastic students and staff alike. Everyone was in pure awe of this spectacular event as Latin America brought to them in their very own courtyard. To commemorate this occasion, we asked students and faculty to answer this sole question:
What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
